Description
Description | The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Transition Industries LLC have signed an agreement to jointly develop the Pacífico Mexinol project, a 6,145 MTPD ultra-low carbon (“green” and “blue”) methanol production facility in Sinaloa, Mexico. The facility is expected to be the largest ultra-low carbon methanol facility in the world, producing “green” methanol from captured carbon and green hydrogen, as well as “blue” methanol from natural gas with carbon capture. Under the agreement, IFC will share a portion of the project development costs, provide substantial expertise to ensure compliance with the IFC Performance Standards and leverage its expertise to support the project development and financing. The project aims to reduce natural gas flaring, diversify Mexico's chemicals capacity, increase exports, and generate employment. The project has engaged with local stakeholders for over four years, is exploring an innovative wastewater solution which aims to avoid any water discharge into the Bay of Ohuira, and potentially results in a positive impact on the local ecosystem. The final investment decision is expected in 2024, with commercial operations starting in late 2027. The project is projected to create a peak of over 3,000 jobs during construction and up to 450 direct and indirect jobs during operations. |
