The collaboration between the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Descon aims to modernize grain storage infrastructure and logistics in Pakistan to reduce annual losses estimated at USD 2 billion for wheat, rice, and maize. This initiative is crucial as 36.8 percent of the population faces food insecurity. The partnership will begin with a feasibility study for building Bulk Storage Depots (BSDs) to improve supply chain efficiency, ensure safer, higher-quality staple grains, and empower small-scale farmers. It aligns with the IBRD Country Partnership Framework's goal of integrating Pakistan into global value chains and addressing infrastructure gaps. Additionally, it supports IFC's Pakistan Country Strategy, focusing on enhancing competitiveness and developing infrastructure to mitigate post-harvest losses in the agribusiness sector.
