Description
Description | The Coastal and Marine Protection II (Pêche Côtière Durable - PCD II) project contributes to the development cooperation programme Protection and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Madagascar. It aims at the sustainable management of mangroves and other natural marine resources by local communities, which thereby improve their socio-economic livelihoods. The communities are supported by selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in managing the areas transferred to them for use more sustainably through transfert de gestion. The measures promoted by NGOs include the participatory development and implementation of resource management agreements such as rules for the use of mangroves, the establishment of a control and surveillance system and ecological monitoring, the promotion of alternative sources of income and new value chains for mangrove products, as well as awareness-raising and training measures. One focus of the measures is on the restoration, valorisation and management of the mangroves on the west coast of Madagascar. The primary target group is the rural population in the six intervention zones in the DIANA and Menabe target regions. The FC module is conceptually based on the predecessor project PCD I (BMZ No. 201669027). The recipient of the FC contribution is the Republic of Madagascar, represented by the Ministry of Finance. The project sponsor is Madagascar National Parks, which is responsible not only for the management of terrestrial and marine protected areas but also for involving the local population in the sustainable protection of sensitive ecosystems. To this end, MNP is working closely with NGOs that are already active in the planned project regions. The total cost of the project is estimated at around EUR 7.2 million. An FC grant of EUR 7.1 million is available to finance the costs of the project, which is supplemented by MNP's own contributions. |
