Description
Description | The project contributes to the sustainable management of natural resources as part of the national poverty reduction strategy and Madagascar's national environmental program (DC program objective). The main aim is to contribute to the sustainable management of natural resources in the coastal areas of Madagascar (FC module objective). The natural resources are to be managed more sustainably by supporting locally managed marine areas (LMMAs) in cooperation with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) already active there. The measures promoted by NGOs in the LMMAs include the development and implementation of resource management agreements such as the designation of protection zones and periods, restrictions on fishing instruments, the promotion of alternative sources of income in the areas of aquaculture and agriculture, and the reforestation of mangrove forests. The increased yields through the improved management of natural resources benefit the local population who depend on subsistence fishing and agriculture. The recipient of the FC contribution is the Republic of Madagascar, represented by the Ministry of Finance. The project sponsor is Madagascar National Parks, which is responsible not only for the management of terrestrial and marine protected areas but also for involving the local population in the sustainable protection of sensitive ecosystems. To this end, MNP is working closely with NGOs that are already implementing the LMMA approach in the planned project regions. The total cost of the project is estimated at around EUR 12.1 million. A FC grant of EUR 10 million is available to finance the costs of the project, which will be supplemented by contributions from the NGOs and MNP. |
