Description | The COASTAL Aquaculture Project involves the restoration of oyster reefs in the Barnegat and Great Bay region of Ocean County, New Jersey. The project includes planting juvenile oysters (spat on shell) raised by shellfish aquaculture producers onto established reef sites to improve water quality and habitat. The restoration sites include the Tuckerton Reef (created in 2016) and the Mill Creek Reef (established in 2022), both monitored by Stockton University. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and aims to link shellfish farming with conservation to enhance ecological health and the local seafood industry. |
