Description | The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project (CVOW) is a massive offshore wind farm consisting of 176 wind turbine generators. The project involves installing 836-foot-tall turbines spaced 0.9 miles apart, located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach extending 15 miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The project will provide 2.6 gigawatts of power, enough for 660,000 homes, and is expected to save $3 billion in fuel costs over the first decade of operation. The installation uses specialized vessels including the Jones Act-qualified Wind Turbine Installation Vessel Charybdis and a fleet of support vessels for installation and cable laying. The project includes laying 176 inter-array cables connecting turbines to offshore substations and nine submarine export cables connecting to the shore grid. |
