Description | The Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant in Ecuador was built between 2010 and 2016 with a US$1.7 billion loan from China’s Eximbank under the Belt and Road Initiative. Constructed by Sinohydro, the plant was intended to generate a third of Ecuador's electricity with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts. The project faced technical and environmental problems, including thousands of cracks in turbine distributors and regressive erosion in the Coca River. Costs escalated from under US$800 million to over US$3.2 billion. The plant underperformed for years but returned to full capacity in September 2025 after repairs. The dam's useful life is now estimated at 15 years instead of the planned 50. The project has been subject to bribery allegations involving payments from Sinohydro. |
