COGNITIVE DESIGN: A European Joint Masters Design Measure

The Cognitive Design project’s goal is to build a transnational and interdisciplinary MA program joining design and media studies with cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence. The rationale of such an interdisciplinary program is that industrial design, media and cultural projects impact their end users physically, mentally, emotionally and socio-culturally but traditional specialist training in areas such as user-experience or user-interface design are too narrow to produce experts who can creatively shape multidimensional design projects from an informed evidence-based perspective. Development of products and services of the future needs specialists who are able to cooperate with experts of social science and the humanities, information technology, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, designers and artists. Current industrial trends call for more integrated interdisciplinary expertise. We call this emerging discipline „Cognitive Design”. A specialist in cognitive design recognizes integrated development needs, manages communication among experts of these fields, understanding each field’s specificities, understands methods of identifying and problem solving of experts of these fields, and the implementation processes of each task. The project has five goals: 1 Build a consortium of HEIs of complementary expertise able to implement a joint MA. This will be based on existing close cooperation between ELTE, MOME (HU), Brescia University (IT), Södertörn University (SE), and Birkbeck, University of London (UK); 2 Find associated partners among research labs and other high tech industrial partners to secure the connection between education and practical implementation. 3 Refine a curriculum in which the diverse expertise results in an organic process fostering creative design thinking. 4 Having the accreditation process of the joint MA program started at least in the program countries involved. 5 Prepare all documents necessary for a full EMJM proposal
