The project entails the development of a deepwater shipping container terminal in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a period of 35 years. Total investment is record for Sri Lanka of $700 million, of which in November 2023, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) $553 million to support the project. The project company is Colombo West International Terminal Private Limited, sponsored by Adani Group with 51% stake, John Keells Holdings with 34%, and the rest is owned by the state. The commencement of the CWICT will add more than 3.2 million TEU of annualised throughput capacity to the Port of Colombo, strengthening its position as an international hub port.
