Colquitz Bridge Widening

This project involves widening, retrofitting, and renewal of two Highway 1 bridges over the Colquitz River with the objective of extending a dedicated shoulder bus lane between Tillicum Road and Admirals-McKenzie Interchange in each direction. The bridges, locally known as the Burnside bridges, are located in Saanich, BC. The Burnside Bridges are currently a constraint which prevents continuation of adjacent dedicated shoulder bus lanes. Major project deliverables include functional and detailed design packages, and a tender package for the bridge improvements, as well as supporting engineering and environmental, reviews and assessments. Engagement with District of Saanich, local Indigenous groups, and BC Transit is ongoing. Construction scope will include demolition of existing walkways to facilitate construction of new girder, pier, and deck facilities; installation of temporary barriers to accommodate lane shifts; construction of deck extension and overlay; and milling and paving. The project will reduce congestion, and improve safety, mobility and reliability of public transportation by creating continuous transit facilities in both directions from Downtown Victoria to the McKenzie Interchange. Increasing transit capacity encourages more transit users thus reducing congestion and GHG emissions through mode-shift and distance travelled by low-occupancy GHG emitting vehicles.
