Project
Conceptual/Proposed

A conceptual framework combining a photon intermediate direct energy conversion (PIDEC) nuclear battery with a nuclear power plant (NPP) to increase safety and efficiency. The system uses plastic scintillators to convert gamma radiation from the reactor into visible light and then electricity, potentially producing about 0.1% of the NPP's electric power during normal operation and more after shutd

Description

Description

A conceptual framework combining a photon intermediate direct energy conversion (PIDEC) nuclear battery with a nuclear power plant (NPP) to increase safety and efficiency. The system uses plastic scintillators to convert gamma radiation from the reactor into visible light and then electricity, potentially producing about 0.1% of the NPP's electric power during normal operation and more after shutdown. This requires redesigning the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) to allow gamma transmission while maintaining safety and pressure integrity.
