Source: Infrastructure Canada
The Comox Valley Sewer Service treats raw sewage (wastewater) from homes and businesses of approximately 45,000 people in Courtenay, Comox and K’ómoks First Nation. More than 14,000 cubic metres of wastewater from these communities flows daily through a pipe located along the Willemar Bluffs. Description
Description | The Comox Valley Sewer Service treats raw sewage (wastewater) from homes and businesses of approximately 45,000 people in Courtenay, Comox and K’ómoks First Nation. More than 14,000 cubic metres of wastewater from these communities flows daily through a pipe located along the Willemar Bluffs. The sewer forcemain that conveys wastewater from the Courtenay Pump Station to the Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre (CVWPCC) was installed in the early 1980s. Portions of the forcemain buried in the marine foreshore have been subjected to harsh environmental conditions and exposed to shoreline erosion that has left the pipe at risk of exposure and damage by waves, rocks and logs. The project includes construction of a new Courtenay Pump Station, upgrades to two other pump stations and replacement of approx. 8.5km of forcemain from the foreshore to an overland route from the Courtenay Pump Station to the CVWPCC. This new conveyance system will route the sewer pipe further inland where it will no longer be vulnerable to damage by storms; as well as seismic events. In addition to facing similar hazards, the existing pump stations are subject to flood risk. This project includes full replacement of an existing pump station and complete mechanical and electrical upgrade of two others, as well as a new forcemain from the Courtenay Pump Station, through K’ómoks First Nation and the Town of Comox, to the CVWPCC in Electoral Area B. This grant application is focused on the replacement of the Courtenay Pump Station which includes: -placement of engineered fill to locate the Courtenay Pump Station site above the 2100 FCL -construction of a new pump station including process mechanical building mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, civil and structural works -construction of buried utilities and tie-in to existing system -completion of a mural on the public facing side of the building by a K’ómoks First Nation artist -landscaping |
