Companhia de Gas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul - Sulgas was incorporated in May 1993 as a joint-stock company with the purpose of distributing and commercializing piped natural gas to Rio Grande do Sul state. Its shareholding structure was established as a partnership of Rio Grande do Sul state (51%) and Petrobras Gas S.A. – GASPETRO (49%). A 50-year concession contract was granted to Sulgas in March 1994. The company committed to build and operate the state's natural gas distribution network. Commercial operations commenced in 2000. In December 2015, GASPETRO sold 49% of its shares to Japanese company Mitsui Gás e Energia do Brasil. In August 2016, a Brazilian judge overturned a preliminary injunction that prevented this selling, authorizing the deal. The new shareholding of Sulgas was established as follows: Rio Grande do Sul state (51%), Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (25%) and Mitsui Gas e Energia do Brasil (24%). As of June 2017, the company had 39,081 clients and a 1061-km long network.
