Companhia Piratininga de Forca e Luz (CPFL Piratininga) was created from the division of the Empresa Bandeirante de Energia S.A. (EBE), a electricity distribution company. In October 1st of 2001, ANEEL, the Brazilian electricity regulatory agency, authorized the division of EBE in two distinct companies, namely, EBE and CPFL Piratininga. CPFL Piratininga is owned by the group CPFL Energia. The company distributes electricity for 27 cities located in two different regions of the State of Sao Paulo (the region west and part of the coast). It covers a total area of 6,785 square kilometers where more than 3 million people lived by the end of 2001. This area corresponds to 3,5% of the total area of the State of Sao Paulo but in 2001 the electricity distributed accounted for 12% of the total electricity consumption of the State. The regions covered by CPFL Piratininga are amongst the most developed region of the State of Sao Paulo. In November 2005, CPFL Energia announced to its shareholders that CPFL Piratininga became a wholly owned subsidiary of CPFL Paulista, which in turn became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CPFL Energia. In September 2012, the state-owned bank BNDES approved a US$ 112.7 million (BRL 220 million) to the project. "CPFL Piratininga shall become a wholly-owned subsidiary of CPFL Paulista, which in turn, shall become a wholly-owned subsidiary of CPFL Energia" In 2001 the company invested US$ 10.8 million (R$ 24 million) and had 1,105,239 customers. In 2002 after investing US$ 15 million (R$ 43.8 million) the company reached the mark of 1,170,000 consumers units.
