Description | This project involves the construction of a 120-MW coal power plant in Puerto Quetzal. This is the first coal fired plant in Guatemala and will use low-sulfur coal to meet the World Bank's environmental standards. Empresa Electrica de Guatemala SA awarded a contract to TECO Power Services and Coastal Power Production in November 1996. The contract included a 15-year power purchase agreement with Empresa Electrica de Guatemala SA. The project's total cost is about $170 million. It will be self-financing. The plant was scheduled to start its commercial operation by mid-1999. The plant is being constructed by J.A. Jones and Black & Veatch. In Mar. 2000, the power station started generating electricity. In 2001, El Paso Corporation acquired Coastal Power along with Coastal's 92% stake in Compania Centroamericana de Electricidad. None None |
