AES Corp., through wholly owned subsidiary AES Aurora El Salvador Ltd., bid $109-million to acquire a 79.78% equity stake in Compania de Luz Electrica de Santa Ana (CLESA), which serves about 188,000 customers in western El Salvador, in a territory bordering Guatemala and Honduras. The financial closure was reached on Feb. 17, 1999. CLESA sells about 590 GWh annually and registers peak demand of 130 MW. Energia Global Inc., with DeSola Group and Pantaleon, subsequently bought 16% of CLESA from AES, reducing the AES stake to 63%. The new owners plan to invest some $10-million by 2001 to expand and upgrade the system. ING Capital provided $60 million in debt for the acquisition. In 2000, Zurich US issued a political risk insurance covering AES CLESA US$ 65 million bond issuance (the funds raised from the issuance will be used to retire existing debt and to continue capital investments.
