The COTAF project – Connected Towns for a Shared Future – addresses key challenges faced by the European Union today, including political polarization, rising intolerance, and difficulties in integrating migrant populations. Funded under the CERV programme, COTAF aims to foster active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, and democratic participation through the innovative method of Human Libraries. This non-formal education tool encourages citizens to “read” living books—individuals who share personal stories of diversity, inclusion, and human rights. These events will be held in group settings and facilitated by trained moderators and cultural mediators to ensure safe, respectful, and meaningful dialogue. A particular focus will be placed on key EU concerns such as socio-economic inclusion of migrants, gender-based violence, and discrimination. The project will be implemented by a network of European municipalities, civil society organizations, and academic institutions. Activities will take place in Budapest, Prague, Athens, Lesvos, Donostia (Basque Country), Istra (Slovenia), and Bologna (Italy), creating inclusive spaces for dialogue across cultures and generations. COTAF's main objectives include reviving community dialogue, combating misinformation and stereotypes, increasing awareness of fundamental rights, and reinforcing social cohesion through local and international networks. It will also create a digital platform to collect and share testimonies, ensuring long-term dissemination and impact. Structured over 24 months, the project foresees thematic events, facilitator training, citizen engagement activities, and cross-border exchanges. Impact will be monitored using both qualitative and quantitative methods, with the goal of developing a replicable model of civic engagement and inclusive participation. Ultimately, COTAF contributes to building a more united, democratic, and inclusive Europe, rooted in shared values and mutual respect.
