Description
Description | The Consolidation of the Protected Areas System Project aims at promoting the conservation, and sustainable use of biodiversity in Mexico, through the consolidation of the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP). The four main components will: 1) support the capitalization of the endowment fund, to be based on matching funds from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the first phase. The investment income of the endowment fund will support conservation operating costs of new priority protected areas, and, for future phases, additional GEF support will expand, and generate investment income for additional protected areas. A fund-raising program will be supported, intended for fundraising activities, which will include government, private firms, and foundations; 2) finance implementation management at the protected area level, through a mix of fund-generated income, fiscal funds, and other financing sources. At the reserve level, activities to be covered by the income derived from the endowment will include basic operation costs, equipment, conservation activities, community involvement, and capacity building; 3) include three subcomponents: central coordination, providing capacity building, and technical assistance to protected areas; government institutional strengthening; and, nongovernmental organizations, and civil society to consolidate conservation learning networks; and, 4) promote inclusion of biodiversity conservation criteria, and sustainable use in development programs affecting protected areas. |
