Description

Description

Project Outcomes and Objectives: The proposed project involves the construction of 1.8 kilometres of dedicated cycling infrastructure and supporting bus stop infrastructure, including bus bays, shelter pads and shelters, between Galea Drive and Lake Ridge Road on Durham Highway 2 in the Town of Ajax. This builds upon the already completed cycling-related Highway 2 Bus Rapid Transit projects in the Region of Durham through the Ontario/Metrolinx Quick Win program. Proposed work includes detailed design, construction, project management and area municipal coordination. Project Readiness: As part of the Ontario/Quick Win program the Highway 2 Transit Priority Measures Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study (durhambrt.ca) was completed in 2012. The preferred design for the bike lanes for this 1.8 Km segment was confirmed as part of the project outcomes along Highway 2 in Ajax. The proposed project falls within the completed EA study area. In addition to having a completed EA, this project aligns with the Region of Durham’s Cycling Plan and Transportation Master Plan update as a major cycling infrastructure project for east/west connectivity in the Region. How the Project Fits with Strategic plan: This project builds towards the completion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system which will help ensure that Regional transportation infrastructure is functional, integrated, reliable and barrier-free. In addition, the cycling facility will support and encourage active living and healthy lifestyles to enhance the connectivity between our communities. As this segment is located in Ajax, the project also aligns with the Town’s goals to improve sustainable transportation options including cycling as outlined in its 2015 Ajax Transportation Demand Management Plan.
