Description

Description

A fixed heavy-duty ramp will be constructed in the Port of Rauma, a multimodal maritime port located on the TEN-T comprehensive network in the northern Baltic Sea, the western coast of Finland. The project will make civilian and EU military transports more efficient by removing a bottleneck in loading heavy project cargo, such as offshore wind turbine components and pre-assembled units and oversized, overloaded military assets in a strategically important area near two military bases. Creating a new loading/unloading site in the port will promote efficient and sustainable use of existing port infrastructure. It will diversify port services to loading and unloading of exceptional project cargo that the port has so far not been able to handle, enabling new customers to use the port. As some customers currently using the existing infrastructure will also be able to shift loading/unloading operations to the new site, it will relieve congestion and shorten average turnaround times in the port. A new type of loading site will also improve resiliency of military transport operations in the Port of Rauma. The project will facilitate smooth multimodal (military) transport operations requiring high infrastructure capacity due to exceptional dimensions or numbers. The new ramp will be slightly sloping and 39 m wide, approx. 135 m long and only 1.20 m high (from mean water level). The low edge of the ramp will make it easier to load and unload heavy cargo and can also be used for roro transports. The load-bearing capacity of the concrete ramp will be 10 t/m2, suitable for 100 t of cargo and 120 t vehicles, including battle tanks. The foundation area of the ramp will be dredged and dredged masses transported to a disposal basin within the Port of Rauma.
