Description

Description

The project addresses studies and works for the construction of the new single track railway line between Nea Karvali and Toxotes and between Nea Karvali railway stop and Kavala Freight Port (Filippos port). The project is located on the Orient/East-Mediterranean (OEM) Corridor of the TEN-T core network. It is part of the Global Project “Construction of the new railway line Thessaloniki – Amfipoli – Nea Karvali – Toxotes Xanthis and upgrade of the line Alexandroupoli – Pythio – Ormenio”. It is also part of the “Sea2Sea” corridor, a multimodal freight corridor, which connects the Aegean to the Black Sea. The overall objectives of the project are to: • complete part of the Thessaloniki – Kavala - Alexandroupoli rail missing link along the OEM and Sea2Sea corridors • ensure compliance with the applicable technical specifications, including maximum design speed of 160 km/h, axle load of 22.5 tons, 740 m train length and UIC GC spatial clearance, • enhance passenger and freight transport operations. To deliver on the overall objectives, the project covers mainly: • the construction of 31.780 km single track railway line from Nea Karvali to Toxotes and 5.3 km single track railway line from Nea Karvali railway stop to Kavala Freight Port, • the construction of railway infrastructure for 5 rail stops/stations: 2 for passengers (stop in Nea Karvali and station in Perni-Gravouna), 2 for freight (terminal station in the Kavala Freight Port and a marshalling yard on the connecting line Nea Karvali - Kavala Freight Port and one service station for OSE in Toxotes area. • the review, update and further elaboration of necessary studies (e.g. alignment, hydraulic, architectural, electro-mechanical (E/M), structural, traffic, geotechnical and environmental) • land expropriations • the relocation of public utility networks The implementation of the project and achievement of its objectives will result in a modern railway line supporting the future developments of the ports along the axis and ensuring safety and adequate capacity in rail transportation. The project will also enhance multimodal transportation (connection of maritime and railway transportation) and the accessibility of peripheral areas, reducing the environmental impacts of transport.
