Consumers Energy Public Safety Power Shutoff Policy

planned

Consumers Energy has launched its Public Safety Power Shutoff policy, allowing the utility to shut off power in certain areas at risk of damaging winds, fire, flooding, and other public safety threats. The policy follows guidance from the Michigan Public Service Commission and uses a multi-level approach to decide on power shutoffs, which are considered a last resort and not routine. Consumers Energy projects that the policy has only been implemented for two days over the past five years. The utility will send notifications in advance, monitor weather in real time, update the public regularly, support the community throughout and after the shutoff, and work to restore power after the event.
