Construction began in 1978 and was completed in March 1985. The project rediverts water flow from Lake Moultrie back to the Santee River, saving taxpayers $36 million per year in dredging costs while benefiting shipping, industrial development, hydropower, and fish and wildlife. It includes a fish lift to allow diadromous fish to continue their migration upstream. |
