Description

Description

The border area between northern Bohuslän and Østfold has an exceptionally rich and interesting history. This applies not least to the rock carvings of the Bronze Age, which, from an international perspective, make an inalienable contribution to Europe’s prehistoric heritage. Today, there is an increasing interest in these 3000-year-old image documents and what they represent. Over the past 30 years, however, archaeologists and geologists have noticed an accelerating weathering that now threatens to wipe out large parts of the region’s rock carvings. If this were to happen, the region loses an important part of its cultural distinctiveness and attractiveness and may lose a key element of tourism and economic development. The project will work in a concrete way on how to preserve the rock carvings in the simplest and cheapest ways for future generations. Furthermore, the project will create the conditions for developing a viable and sustainable cultural tourism that allows the rock carvings to be displayed and used without being consumed at the same time. Target groups are tourism and cultural organisations, business, schools, universities and, not least, the population of the border region. The project participants from the various organisations in Norway and Sweden each possess excellence in their respective fields of expertise. Cross-border project work will bring about a major transfer of skills between countries and, in addition, people and organisations with different skills will gain greater understanding and respect for each other’s jobs and thus learn to better take care of the threatened rock carvings.
