The COPEIJ Project offers to involve the national inspections services in the evaluation and improvement of environmental protection by criminal justice, at the local, national and cross-border levels, in the context of the revision of the 2008 directive on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal law and its future transposition in national law. Based on a common participative methodology promoting transversality at every project stage, an evaluation of national situations will be carried out, applying a bottom up approach as close as possible to the judicial territories, and complemented by a global top-down European approach. A team of European expert inspectors will focus on evaluating the functioning of the criminal enforcement chain as applied to the treatment of environmental offences in general, and transboundary offences in particular. Recommendations and operational tools will be proposed to the project’s target groups and a European methodological guide on environmental criminal justice will be developed based on the national situations. The general objective of the COPEIJ Project is to support and promote the effectiveness of environmental protection by criminal justice in the European justice area, at the stages of prevention, sanction, and reparation of environmental damage.
