The Coastal Highway Project for El Salvador will assist in financing the construction of an all weather highway to extend 306 kilometers along the country's Pacific Coast. The project will develop a region with large agricultural resources that are currently being underutilized because of inadequate roads. Its components are: 1) construction of the coastal highway; 2) construction of feeder and branch roads; 3) maintenance of main and local roads; 4) strengthening of the staff, facilities, and methods of its maintenance organization; 5) acquisition of technical assistance from consulting engineers; and 6) employment of qualified contractors. These improvements will stimulate agricultural output in an underdeveloped area, provide an outlet for population settlement, and promote a better balance between food production and food requirements in El Salvador.
