The project will create a research Centre addressed to the environmental sustainability and the exploitation of renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean area. It will involve the areas of Sicily and Malta. The Centre aims to support local authorities, clusters of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and SMEs in the implementation of Sustainable Consumption and Production and Consumption (SCP) strategies, according to COM (2008) 397 def., directive 2009/125/EC on the energy related products and the european plan "climate - energy" (strategy Europe 20-20-20 within 2020). The Centre will aim to analyze the innovative solutions of SCP, particularly addressed to the clusters of SMEs and the local authorities. The Centre will provide an effective support to enterprises oriented to the transfer and the development of innovative renewable energy technologies, a technical and scientific support for the eco-design and the technological innovation of low impact products and services; a support to the local authorities in the definition of sustainable planning tool in urban context. The Centre will represent an interface among the Mediterranean area, the Italian and Maltese Environmental Ministry (see letter of appreciation by the Italian Ministry of Environment) and the Joint Research Center of the European Commission.
