Crest Hill PFAS Water Remediation Project

The Crest Hill City Council is reviewing short-term remediation options to address excessive levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the city's drinking water wells. The long-term solution involves transitioning to Lake Michigan water, expected to be complete by mid-2030. Short-term options include installing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to regulate pumping from cleaner wells, shutting down heavily polluted wells, and renting filtration systems for moderately polluted wells. The SCADA system installation is expected to cost about $200,000 and be implemented within six to nine months. A pilot filtration program could cost about $500,000 for one year, with full filtration costing between $1 million and $2 million per well site over five years.
