Description

Description

The ongoing civil war in Syria is leading to an increasing influx of refugees into neighboring countries. At the beginning of March 2013, a total of around one million people were officially registered with the UN, of which around 350,000 were in Jordan and Lebanon. After the first waves of refugees were taken in by the population of cities and towns, Jordan began building the first refugee camp in Zaatari in July 2012, and further refugee camps are to be opened shortly. The influx is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure in the northern governorates of Jordan and in districts near the border in Lebanon. It is expected that the situation will worsen in the coming months due to further influx. The aim of the FC measure is to improve basic infrastructure and access for refugees to basic education, sustainable water and sanitation supplies, child welfare measures and care, and basic health care. The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group consists of Syrian refugees in camps and communities as well as the local population in the host communities. The total costs of the regional project from the beginning to June 2013 are provisionally estimated by UN organizations to be around USD 1,050 million. The submitted audit of EUR 5 million will partially finance UNICEF's new funding requirements in 2013 (EUR 5.0 million) in continuation of the German contribution for Jordan in 2012, 90% of which will go towards water and sewage supplies in Zaatari and Azraq and 10% for child protection measures.
