Description

Description

The ongoing civil war in Syria is leading to an increasing influx of refugees into neighboring countries. At the beginning of June 2013, a total of over 1.4 million people were officially registered with the UN, of which around 477,000 were in Jordan alone. After the first waves of refugees were taken in by the population of cities and towns, Jordan set up the first refugee camp in Zaatari in the summer of 2012, and further refugee camps are to be opened shortly. The influx is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure in the northern governorates of Jordan and in districts near the border in Lebanon. It is expected that the situation will worsen further in the coming months due to further influx. The aim of the FC measure is to improve basic infrastructure and access for refugees to basic education, sustainable water and sanitation supplies, child welfare measures and care, and basic health care. The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group consists of Syrian refugees in camps and communities as well as the local population in the host communities. UN organizations estimate the total cost of the regional project under the Regional Response Plan for Jordan to be just under USD 1.0 billion by the end of 2013. The submitted stockpile audit of EUR 30 million will partially finance UNICEF's new funding requirements in 2013 in the education and child protection sectors (EUR 5.0 million), in continuation of the German contribution for Jordan and Lebanon in 2012.
