Description
Description | The ongoing civil war in Syria is leading to an increasing influx of refugees into neighboring countries. At the beginning of June 2013, a total of around 1.5 million people were officially registered with the UN, of which around 500,000 were in Lebanon, 472,000 in Jordan and 75,000 in Egypt. After the first waves of refugees were taken in by the population of cities and towns, Jordan opened the first refugee camp in Zaatri in July 2012, which reached its capacity limit of around 110,000 refugees in May 2013. The Emirati Jordanian Camp, which opened in April 2013, has a capacity of 5,000 refugees, and another camp in Azray with a capacity of 130,000 refugees is planned. The influx is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure in the northern governorates of Jordan and in districts near the border in Lebanon. It is expected that the situation will worsen in the coming months due to further immigration. By the end of 2013, UNHCR expects there to be up to one million refugees in Jordan and one million in Lebanon. The aim of the FC measure is to make a rapid contribution to securing the basic needs of Syrian refugees. As part of the regional project, food supplies are provided by a Regional Emergency Program (EMOP) of the World Food Programme (WEP). Supplies are ensured by issuing food vouchers. In addition, food packages are distributed to individual target groups. The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group consists of Syrian refugees in camps and communities as well as the local population in the host communities. The funding gap for the WEP EMOP project is estimated at around EUR 262 million for Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt between June and December 2013. The commitment of EUR 15 million will partially finance WEP's funding requirements in 2013. |
