Description
Description | The ongoing civil war in Syria is leading to an increasing influx of refugees into neighboring countries. Following support in Jordan and Lebanon, the regional project will be expanded to Iraq and Egypt in the next phase. At the end of July 2013, a total of almost 1.9 million people were officially registered with the UN, of which over 500,000 were in Jordan and Lebanon. The influx is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure, particularly in areas near the border in the host countries. It is expected that the situation will worsen in the coming months as a result of further influx. The aim of the FC measure is to improve basic infrastructure and refugees' access to basic education, sustainable water and sanitation, child welfare measures, basic health care and food security. These sectors are the direct responsibility of UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Food Program (WFP). The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group consists of both Syrian refugees in camps and communities and the local population in the host communities. UN organizations have provisionally estimated the total cost of the regional project from January to December 2013 at around USD 2.1 billion. The submitted audit of EUR 15 million will partially finance UNICEF's further financing needs in Iraq in 2013 (EUR 5.0 million) in continuation of the German contribution for Jordan and Lebanon. A further EUR 10 million will be used for the WEP in Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt. |
