Croatian Quantum Communication Infrastructure – CroQCI

In 2019, Croatian government recognized importance of momentum and development phase of getting involved in quantum communication infrastructure (QCI) EU cooperation framework, identified as critical for the EU’s long term, thus national strategic autonomy and digital sovereignty. In order to assure its involvement, CroQCI Consortium was formed, comprised of major national research institutions and universities, key public institutions, and relevant public companies. This partnership collaboration enabled development of the project with the goal of setting and piloting deployment of advanced experimental quantum systems and communication networks, complemented and integrated with the range of classical security technologies. It envisaged building and testing devices and systems combining the best of quantum, post-quantum classical and quantum-enhanced solutions, and practice. For the mentioned data to be transmitted ultra-securely, detailed QCI network architecture design and project use-cases were developed along with composing terrestrial-based solutions while assuring fulfillment of the preconditions for its space component. Since important for sustainability of the project results, enabling firm and solid grounds for the development and deployment of national QCI, its education component will comply with the maturity of the technology, current and future needs encompassing EuroQCI’s initiative and related efforts to secure EU strategic digital capacities and infrastructure overall.
