Cross Bay Boulevard and Woodhaven Boulevard Development

The project involved the construction and improvement of two major Queens roadways, Cross Bay Boulevard and Woodhaven Boulevard, linking Elmhurst to the Rockaways. It included building a 100-foot wide road across Jamaica Bay with steel and concrete bulkheads, sand infill, water mains from Ridgewood Reservoir, and two large bridges: the North Channel Bridge and the Cross Bay Bridge. The project was completed in 1925, costing just under $7 million. Later improvements included widening Woodhaven Boulevard from 100 to 150 feet at a cost of $1.5 million, reconfiguration and straightening during the Great Depression, construction of overpasses, replacement of the drawbridge with the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge in 1970, and replacement of the North Channel Bridge with the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge in 1988. Select Bus Service was introduced in 2017 on these boulevards.
