Description

Description

The project will consist of the enhancement of the pedestrian area along West Main Street extending from Depot Street going north 250 linear feet along the commercial store fronts. Improvements will include: replacing curb and gutter, widening the existing sidewalks (on west side of street), improving ADA access, adding new benches and trash cans, pedestrian lighting (with breakaway design) and street trees. Improved pedestrian crossings will be added to all four corners of the Deport Street/West Main Street intersection. The existing 90 degree angle parking along West Main will be changed to 60 degree angle parking to accommodate wider sidewalks. The travel lanes will be adjusted to a standard 12' lane width, also for wider sidewalks. A pedestrian plaza will also be created along the west side of West Main Street, between West Main Street and the railroad tracks. This plaza area will provide an area for visitors to gather prior to riding the scenic train at Blue Ridge.
