Mumbai's iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undergoing a massive transformation under a ₹2,450-crore redevelopment project aimed at converting the historic station into a world-class multimodal transport hub. The project seeks to modernize CSMT while preserving its historic architectural character and includes features such as 100 elevators, 75 escalators, 10 travelators, and parking capacity for nearly 1,700 vehicles. The redevelopment model, branded as 'RailOPolis,' envisions an integrated urban transport and commercial ecosystem combining rail connectivity with retail, food, tourism, and entertainment facilities. Proposed additions include an elevated deck with ticketing counters, air-conditioned waiting lounges, food courts, shopping and entertainment zones, passenger convenience centres, and a 25-metre-wide foot overbridge connecting the station to DN Road. A phased implementation plan is targeted for completion by March 2027 to address urban mobility challenges.
