The development objective of the Cusco Regional Development Project for Peru is to improve the quality of tourism and solid waste management services and increase the resilience of the tourism sector to the impacts of natural disasters in the provinces of Calca, Urubamba, and Cusco. The project has four components. The first component is development and consolidation of tourism services. The objective of this component is to improve the quality and coverage of tourism services in the sacred valley and surrounding areas. The second component is integrated solid waste management. This component aims at improving the local capacity to clean streets and public places and to efficiently collect, transport, and dispose of solid waste in the provinces of Calca, Urubamba, and Cusco. The third component is disaster risk management and disaster preparedness. The objective of this component is to increase the resilience of the local population, tourists, and infrastructure in touristic areas with high vulnerability to natural disasters. The component is aimed at increasing the resilience of the local population and tourism infrastructure to natural disasters. The fourth component is institutional strengthening, management and monitoring, and evaluation. This component will support the capacity building of the principal institutions involved in the operation of tourism activities in the sacred valley, and commission to supervise the cultural tourism plan PERU-UNESCO- Comision Especial para Supervigilar el Plan Turistico Cultural PERUUNESCO (COPESCO), including its project coordination unit (PCU). The component will strengthen the institutional capacity of the PCU, special regional project of plan COPESCO- Proyecto Especial Regional (PER plan) COPESCO, to enhance the institutional capabilities required for the successful implementation of project activities, including compliance with procurement, safeguards, financial management, and monitoring and evaluation requirements.
