Description
Description | This application for a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence builds on the success of the existing EU-funded Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence (JMEUCE) at Dalhousie University, and the Jean Monnet (JM) activities to which it is linked (currently, a JM Chair on Border Control, JM Module for a summer school and JM Network on Genome Editing and Agricultural Policy). The JMEUCE was established in 2006 and it has served as a key component of the university’s identified research cluster of European Studies, positioning it as a leader in this field, locally, nationally and internationally. Through JMEUCE’s proposed activities for 2023-2026, Dalhousie University will consolidate and further expand the current offering of EU-related academic, outreach and networking activities with a view to deepening knowledge among academics and students and enhancing the awareness of both government stakeholders and the general public on a range of topics pertaining to the EU and EU-Canada relations. The proposed program targets two timely and pressing policy themes that affect the EU and its relations with the rest of the world: 1) Conflict and displacement in Europe: the case of Ukraine; 2) EU medicines and medical devices governance in global contexts. The two themes will inform the Centre’s main research activities, namely the organization of a workshop and public event, support for fieldwork research in Europe, and the production of a documentary. The Centre will also offer a Speaker Series, carry out joint initiatives with international partners and public outreach events involving local high schools, policy-makers, practitioners, and members of the public. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the EU will be enhanced through support for exciting opportunities for student mobility and experiential learning, and the granting of awards for research related to the EU. |
