The objectives of the project are to: (i) strengthen the institutional framework for dam safety assurance in the Central Government and participating states; and (ii) to upgrade the safety features in and around selected dams to enhance their safety status as required, through remedial works, installation of flood forecasting systems and other basic safety facilities. The project will support: (a) technical assistance to a newly formed State Dam Safety Committee responsible for determining priorities among safety-related activities; (b) strengthening of the Dam Safety Organization, responsible for inspection, analysis, and reporting on the safety status of dams; (c) adding power backup systems, communications, all-weather access roads, and monitoring instrumentation and other basic safety facilities at priority sites; and (d) remedial works at approximately 33 dams where potential safety-related deficiencies have been identified, and other dams which will be identified during execution of the safety assurance program.
