Dandenong Road Underpass

Excavation works for a new road underpass beneath the rail line at Dandenong have broken through, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the Webster Street level crossing removal. The underpass will connect Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads, providing a new east-west link and removing heavy vehicles from Dandenong's CBD. The project is part of the Victorian Government's program to remove level crossings and improve safety and traffic flow. Excavation continues following the relocation of a major gas pipeline. Specialized groundwater management systems are used due to proximity to Dandenong Creek. Sustainability measures include donating excavated soil for quarry rehabilitation and recycling cement-based materials. The underpass will connect to Cheltenham and Hammond roads on the west and a new signalised intersection at Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to the east, improving network efficiency and reducing congestion.
