Description

Description

Leading the large-scale power plant projectThe Dangjin thermal power plant designed on imported coal currently operate eight units with a capacity of 500㎿ each. New units 9 and 10 constructed by Hyundai E&C are busy preparing for coming commercial operation. The 223-billion-won project is to construct units 9 and 10, the first 1,000㎿-class coal-fired power plants in Korea. Most of high-purity electricity to be generated here is sent to the capital area and the Chungcheong-do region. The Dangjin thermal power station units 9 and 10 produce approximately 17.1 billion kWh on a yearly basis and have a high overall efficiency of 43.82 percent, leading to reducing 110,000 tons of fuel each year and as much as 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. hyundai E&C received the order from the Korea East-West Power(EWP) as a main contractor for mechanical and electric work and also as a sub-contractor for civil and construction work. After signing the deal in July 2010, Hyundai E&C began the construction in October 2012. We originally planned to complete the construction for the purpose of electric generation on November 1, 2012. However, we could advance the schedule by one month as we finished steel frame work earlier than expected. Hyundai E&C made units 9 and 10 ready for power receiving in April 2014 and February 2015, respectively. The initial firing took place in April 2015.Overcoming challenges by using different methods of construction in the light of different situationsThe units 9 and 10 are ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants. Only some advanced countries such as Japan and Germany have related source technologies regarding the USC system with a steam pressure of over 246㎏/㎠·g and a steam temperature of over 603°C. The USC power plants can raise the pressure and temperature to the highest level as modern technology permits. Burning coal as much as possible leads to increasing the amount of steam generation and dramatically cutting back on the emissions of carbon dioxide from burning coal.In addition, Hyundai E&C invested 20 percent of the total construction costs to deal with common problems facing power plants consuming coal. In this sense, we built a coal yard within the site, which is the first of its kind among thermal power plants in Korea. We had to address many difficulties as we attempted to construct one of the country’s largest thermal power plants. Different companies were in charge of different processes including civil engineering and construction, mechanical and electrical system, coal handling system and desulfurization system, which caused disruptions to the implementation of the construction processes. We were determined to finish the construction on time under any circumstances and utilized different methods of construction to meet various situations. Thanks to the active responses, we could complete the construction on schedule without major safety accidents in spite of the relatively short construction schedule and the dangerous construction work.
