Description

In May 2016, Djibouti has concluded a deal for the construction and maintenance of a regional submarine cable system with six other telecom service providers. The Djibouti-Africa Regional Express (DARE) submarine broadband cable will connect 5 countries in the Horn and East Africa and the Middle East (Djibouti, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania) and spans over 5,500 km. Project completion is expected by May 2018. Total project investment has not been officially disclosed, but sources mentioned a total investment cost of $140 million. TE SubCom, an undersea communications technology supplier, has been awarded the supply contract for the DARE, which will provide additional protection and diversity to existing heavily congested undersea cable systems.
