Description | The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project has produced the largest high-resolution 3D map of the Universe ever created by mapping over 47 million galaxies and quasars. The survey was conducted over five years using the DESI telescope mounted on the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope at NSF Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA. The project finished ahead of schedule and will continue observations into 2028 to expand the map by about 20%, including regions closer to the Milky Way plane and more distant, fainter galaxies. |
