Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) 3D Universe Map
Sector: Science • Location: Kitt Peak, Arizona, United States
Source: India Today
The DESI project involved creating the biggest 3D map of the universe by mapping over 47 million galaxies and quasars using a super-smart camera with 5,000 fiberoptic eyes mounted on the Nicholas U Mayall 4-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, US. The project started in May 2021 and completed its five-year survey a year early, covering one-third of the sky and tracing cosm

Description | The DESI project involved creating the biggest 3D map of the universe by mapping over 47 million galaxies and quasars using a super-smart camera with 5,000 fiberoptic eyes mounted on the Nicholas U Mayall 4-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, US. The project started in May 2021 and completed its five-year survey a year early, covering one-third of the sky and tracing cosmic history back 11 billion years. DESI aims to help scientists understand dark energy and the accelerating expansion of the universe, with plans to continue observations through 2028 to expand the map by another 20 percent. |
