Description
Description | With the rapid growth of Big Tech's data centers threatening to overload U.S. electricity grids, policymakers are considering a solution to disconnect these energy-intensive data centers from the grid during power emergencies to prevent blackouts. Texas has already passed legislation to set standards for power emergencies requiring utilities to disconnect large electric users like data centers. Similar proposals are emerging in the mid-Atlantic region and other parts of the U.S. The nation's largest grid operator, PJM Interconnection, has proposed a concept where data centers may not be guaranteed electricity during power emergencies, sparking debate among power plant owners, the tech industry, and state governments. Some data centers are also installing backup diesel generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply during outages. A notable example includes a proposed $2 billion data center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Google agreed to reduce electricity use during grid stress periods. |
