Data drives the world. According to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, “Quality, accessible, timely and reliable disaggregated data will be needed ...” to drive actions, and monitor and verify achievements. Indeed, the huge impact of data-driven initiatives in the current economy cannot be questioned. In September 2024, the top-5 largest companies in the world are tech companies leading data-driven innovation and research. The Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence (DEAI) consortium is composed by five European HEIs with a long-lasting lead in Data Engineering and AI, and all of them counting with world-class researchers and lecturers on these fields as follows: Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), (3) Technical Universität Wien (TUW), (4) Università degli Studi di Padova (UniPD), and (5) Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL). The consortium is complemented with a network of associated partners. Our common vision builds from the shared experience of the main and associated partners on the difficulties to find suitable data engineers to lead the future innovative and research AI projects in Europe. The Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence programme aims at becoming a world-wide reference in the development of knowledge, talent and leadership in Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence to cope with the lack of productivity in complex and large data-driven AI projects. The proper conjunction of DE and AI will undoubtedly boost Europe’s competitiveness in front of the US and China in the AI field.
