China is building a 78,000-tonne artificial floating island designed to withstand nuclear blasts. It is a mobile, semi-submersible, twin-hull platform that can support 238 people for four months without new supplies. The island is as large as China's Fujian aircraft carrier and will be operational in 2028. It can withstand rough seas with 6-9 metre waves and category 17 typhoons. The structure uses metamaterial sandwich panels to absorb shocks and is designed for all-weather, long-term residency. It includes critical compartments for emergency power, communications, and navigation control, ensuring nuclear blast protection. The design references a military specification for nuclear blast resistance, making it capable of handling worst-case nuclear attack scenarios.
