Description

Description

A transportation safety plan approved by Knowlton Township to prevent accidents and congestion on a deadly section of Interstate 80 near the Delaware Water Gap. The plan includes mitigation of safety concerns near an S-curve and rockfall hazards between Exit 4 and the Delaware Water Gap Bridge, as recommended by NJDOT. The project addresses sharp curves, limited sight conditions, lack of shoulders, short acceleration and deceleration lanes, and multiple ramps in a short distance. The original rockfall mitigation project started in 2009 with an estimated cost of $4.5 million, but costs have since increased significantly. The total estimated cost for all projects in this section is now $178.6 million, including $82.4 million for the I-80 Westbound Rockfall Mitigation Project and $92.2 million for replacing the retaining wall on the I-80 Eastbound section. The mitigation plan will take several years to complete.
