Description

Description

"The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence ""Democracy for Europe and Humanity"" EUMANITY DEMOS addresses relevant topics for the EU and European Studies: active citizenship and participation, political awareness, rule of law, democratic freedoms and fundamental rights. The CoE will pursue the goals of interdisciplinarity, excellence in research and innovation in education. It will also open new paths of interaction among scholars, civil society, media, and policy-makers. Three kinds of activities – researching, teaching, and fostering policy dialogue – will serve the goals (mutually interdependent) of developing policy recommendations, institutional frames, toolboxes, narratives and methodologies for supporting action towards democracy at all levels, building on a rich and diverse mix of competences, countering the threats of populism and manipulation and supporting the EU’s role in leading the defence of democracy and multilateralism while promoting its values and its quality of life. Specific focuses and workstreams of the CoE EUMANITY DEMOS will be (i) Democracy at all levels, from local to global; (ii) Gender mainstream, and inclusion, (iii) Digital Democracy, (iv) Environmental Democracy, (v) Culture and Sport for democracy. Humanity needs democracy, and current times and challenges call us to rethink it in a new format for the age of interdependence, profound technological transformation, and requiring a renewed pact with nature. Democracy for the XXI century should be multilevel (from local to global), fair (addressing inequalities and fostering inclusion and participation), in harmony with nature, and taking advantage of the most advanced technological tools, yet human-centred. The added value is bridging the gap between academia and civil society at local and EU levels through dedicated events. The estimated audience is 1,000 students, 200 national and international civil servants/public authorities, 100 stakeholders, and 1,500 event participants."
