The Deocha-Pachami Dewanganj Harisingha (DPDH) project is an ambitious coal mining project in Birbhum district, West Bengal, touted as the world's second largest and Asia's largest coal block. The project involves excavation of a thick basalt layer to reach the coalbed and aims to place India prominently on the global coal map. The project has faced delays primarily due to resistance from tribal villages unwilling to give up their land. Initial excavation work started in bits and pieces from 2016 to 2022, with a renewed push in February 2025 under tight security. The project includes land acquisition packages and job offers to landowners, but tribal resistance and environmental concerns persist.
